At Hummuzz Foods, we care for our planet and always think about new ways to fight climate change. Food Waste and Plastic recycling are two major factors that impact our environment. After analyzing and rethinking our carbon footprint, we weighed the pros and cons of these factors, and we decided to switch to plastic containers because the benefits for doing so exceeds the benefits of using biodegradable paper containers. Our new plastic container keeps the hummus fresh twice as long and minimizes food waste, thereby reducing our emission and carbon footprint on the environment.
You Spoke, We Listened
Our products goes through many phases before it reaches your fridge, and a big part of that is transportation. Many of you have complained about receiving the hummus in our previous packaging with broken lids, and some of you expressed your frustration for the expiry date being too short, or the hummus going bad in a short time. We understand your frustration, and we take all your comments and feedback seriously.
We listened to your inquiries and took a decision to switch to 100% recyclable plastic which keeps your hummus fresh twice as long and minimize food waste together.
Detrimental Impact of Food Waste on The Environment
Food waste contributes to substantial environmental degradation. Approximately one-third of all food produced for human consumption is wasted, leading to an unnecessary waste of resources such as water, energy, and land. This wastage results in an increased carbon footprint, as discarded food releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas, when it decomposes in landfills. In fact, if food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the United States and China.
Producing food requires substantial amounts of water. When food is wasted, it also means that the water used in its production, irrigation, and processing is wasted. This is a significant concern in regions facing water scarcity, where every drop counts. This leads to deforestation and destruction of natural habitats, contributing to biodiversity loss. When food is wasted, it implies that these environmental sacrifices were made in vain.
The biodegradable paper containers we used in the past are manufactured in China, they are even a cheaper alternative for us vs the plastic containers we switched to recently. But (and that’s a very big but) shipping thousands of containers across long distances, particularly from overseas, require substantial amounts of fuel and energy, which in turn significantly increase transportation-related emissions and carbon footprint.
Our new 100% recyclable plastic containers on the other hand are made in Quebec, reducing our carbon footprint by some 12,000 km.
Buying Local
And last but not least. At Hummuzz and Lufa Farms we believe in buying local for many reasons:
- Minimize the need for long-haul transportation, resulting in fewer greenhouse gas emissions and lower environmental impact.
- Choosing local products stimulates the economy by supporting local businesses, farmers, and artisans and also creating jobs in the process.
- Reducing reliance on global supply chains.
